RBFRS Pilot scheme to combat false automatic fire alarms

According to a recent survey by The Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service (RBFRS) 92% of all Automatic Fire Alarm (AFA) activations -more than 3,000 per year - turn out to be false alarms.

Because of this a drive has been launched to cut the number of false alarms that fire crews are called to.

The RBFRS is testing a pilot scheme to tackle the issue of automatic fire alarms (AFA) which costs the organization £150,000 a year.

RBFRS area manager for prevention and protection, said: “When our emergency control room receives a call generated by an AFA, the caller will be required to confirm if there is a fire, suspected fire, or whether the alarm is confirmed as a false alarm.

“This means that we will send the usual emergency response, unless we are told that the alarm has been confirmed as a false alarm.”

He added: “It is not just the financial cost of these calls that has an impact.

“False alarms divert fire crews from genuine emergencies, cause unnecessary risk to firefighters and the public when responding, disrupt our training and operational preparation and community safety activities.”
